The Soul-Led Reader: Why Genres Don’t Define Me

A cozy flatlay featuring an open book on a soft blanket, a cup of cocoa, a cookie, and a bowl with a pinecone—evoking warmth, comfort, and soulful reading.

There’s something comforting about slipping into a familiar genre—like returning to an old friend. But over time, I realized that sticking to the same kind of stories left me… restless. Like I was craving something, but I didn’t know what. Thats when I realized that genres don’t define me.

That’s when I stopped reading with my head and started reading with my mood—with my soul.

When I shop for books, I rarely have a specific one in mind. I go with what I’m drawn to in the moment. And honestly? I shock myself most of the time—especially after finishing a genre I didn’t expect to love so much.

At first, I thought I was just being random. But when I really reflected on it, I realized this way of reading is intentional—whether I mean it to be or not.

Why I Switch Things Up

Let me explain: when I read too much of one genre, it starts to affect how I see the world.
If I binge romance, I find myself drifting into dreamland, then coming back to real life and thinking… wait, is something missing in my relationship?
Of course not. I love my husband and our relationship is exactly what I want it to be. But my brain? It gets so roped into these book worlds. It starts comparing. Romanticizing. Dream-building.

Fantasy? Whew. After a few too many, I start wondering if I’m secretly a fae queen and if my mate has magical powers he just hasn’t told me about yet.
It’s wild in here. 😂

Even mystery novels pull me in hard—I’ll be reading thrillers and suddenly I’m spotting “suspicious behavior” in the grocery store line. I mean… I could probably solve a fictional murder in under 200 pages at this point. JK. (Mostly.)

You get the point. Books change me while I’m inside them. And that’s what I love about reading. If I could make it my full-time job, I would without a second thought.

But because my mind lives so deeply in stories, I have to stay grounded by switching it up.

Chaotic reading to me?
Now, that looks like sticking to just one genre. That’s what makes me feel stuck. It flattens my inner world when I’m craving layers.

I’m a multiversal, multidimensional reader—because I’m a multidimensional person.
And I need to live in worlds that reflect that. This is why genres don’t define me.

Why I Don’t Stick to One Genre

Books meet us where we are.
Some stories hold our hands. Some wake us up. Others remind us to dream.

Reading across genres helps me stay connected to my emotions without getting stuck in them.

  • When I’m anxious, I gravitate toward cozy mysteries or light rom-coms.
  • When I’m feeling introspective, I crave memoirs or literary fiction.
  • Fantasy lifts me out of the everyday, while historical fiction grounds me in perspective.

Each genre speaks to a different part of my soul. And I think that’s kind of beautiful.

Genre Hopping = Bookish Freedom

I used to think I had to “pick a lane”—that being a fantasy reader or a romance girlie made me more of a real reader.

But honestly? Real readers just read. Widely, imperfectly, joyfully.

Reading multiple genres means I never feel boxed in. If I’m in a reading slump, I don’t panic—I pivot.

What I’ve Learned from Each Genre

  • Romance: Taught me softness is strength.
  • Fantasy: Reminded me that magic is possible—even when you can’t see it yet.
  • Memoir: Showed me the power of someone simply telling the truth.
  • Thrillers: Gave me adrenaline when I needed to feel something fast.
  • Historical Fiction: Gave me time travel without the airfare—and a better understanding of the present.
  • Self-Help: Helped me hit pause, reflect, and come back to myself.
